![]() ![]() Love and extreme hardships of a woman in a foreign land. ![]() This is a full-cast production, narrated by Cate Barratt and featuring the voices of Linda Barrans, John Burlinson, Mark Crowle-Groves, Denis Daly, Susan Iannucci, Grace Keller Scotch, Jeff Moon, Sara Morsey, Kendra Murray, and Graham Scott. The Heptameron of Margaret, Queen of Navarre (1880), NOVEL LXVII. The stories include intimate details of adultery, flattery, betrayal, rape, and war, and their candor may startle even 21st-century listeners. Proposed as an edifying way of passing the time while a bridge is being repaired, the tale-telling - as well as the conversations that follow each story - quickly becomes a battle of wits between the sexes, with tales concerning illicit lovers, romantic conquests, lecherous monks, manly honor (and their opposite), and women's virtue (and their opposite). Marguerite de Navarre (1492-1549) was the sister of French king Franois I, and she played a tremendously important role in French culture and politics. Her masterpiece, The Heptameron, is a collection of some 72 stories told by five gentlemen and five ladies who find themselves stranded in an abbey. Marguerite de Navarre is a fascinating and successful author of the early 16th Century. She was the wife of both Charles IV, duke of Alençon, and Henry II of Navarre, and the grandmother of King Henry IV of France. The Heptameron, Marguerite de Navarre Introduction. Queen Marguerite de Navarre (April 11, 1491-December 21, 1549) was one of the most powerful women of her age, having helped to negotiate the Treaty of Cambrai, known as the Ladies' Peace. ![]()

And to be responsible, the ethnographer must draw a firm line between observation and criminality. But to be worthwhile, the stories must be accurate and reliable. I believe in the value of ethnography, and it is especially important to chronicle the lives of men and women who are otherwise marginalized and oppressed. What’s more, I was stunned to read of an incident in which Goffman claimed to have participated in a plot to kill a rival gang member.Ĭonsequently, I wrote a critical review of On the Run, pointing out these and other problems. Too many of the incidents seemed unlikely, based upon my own experience as a legal aid and criminal defense lawyer in similar neighborhoods. ![]() On the Run is the story of sociologist Alice Goffman’s six years of immersion in a struggling Philadelphia neighborhood, in which she tells the stories of the “routine stops, searches, raids, and beatings that young men navigate as they come of age.” The book was initially hailed as an ethnographic classic, but to me it raised red flags. ![]() ![]() I think this book touches many emotions and creates many learning moments for many of the characters. There are some witty characters, along with some that learn lessons along the way. However, it takes her petsitting Prozac and meeting a few other people to turn that life around. Meredith is another story, she is a mess! Yes her fiance was killed in a brutal manner, but life goes on and one can still grieve and miss a loved one and continue with life. Despite the arrogance, I think he learns something from Meredith’s pain and current situation, that perhaps there is more to the human emotions than he has experienced throughout time. It took me a couple of chapters to understand the flow, but once I did, I enjoyed the back and forth and especially when it was Prozac’s chapter because I found him to be a bit arrogant, but considering his history that he lays out for you in an early chapter, it isn’t too surprising. I think there might be a few chapters from Helen or someone else’s POV, but not many. This story goes back in forth primarily from Prozac and Meredith’s point of view. He definitely was not expecting Meredith – a woman that lost her fiance 3 years ago and was still grieving. Even with her successful writing career, shes not motivated to work.
